How Tadweer is changing the way we view waste with the lessons of the circular economy

Promoting a circular economy has never been more important, and with Tadweer’s focus on harnessing waste as a valuable resource, today I will be speaking at a COP28 session titled “The Circular Economy: Shaping Sustainable Futures in the UAE”.

As a global community, we must begin rethinking our approach to sustainability, shifting our focus to redefine waste management, and this starts with the circular economy. During the session, I will speak alongside experts from across the world as we take a deep dive approach into the importance of circular economy initiatives while addressing its impact on climate change mitigation.

The circular economy is top of mind for Tadweer and its partners; together we’re reshaping mindsets, introducing initiatives like deposit schemes, and advocating policy changes. For example, by the UAE pledging to ban all single-use plastics by 2026, including Styrofoam cups, plastic packaging, wet wipes, and plastic cutlery, we are diverting waste from landfill, and through our Waste to Energy plant, will be providing clean energy to further help reduce emissions. We have already built the foundations for this with our Waste to Zero global initiative to decarbonize the waste management sector, in partnership with the Ministry of Climate Change and the Environment.

I’ll also share my thoughts on how governments and businesses can collaborate to shape the climate agenda towards a circular economy. This will include how we are building an action-oriented partnership network and collaborating across a diverse array of stakeholders to implement sustainable solutions. This allows us to minimize the environmental impact of waste management and show the world that waste is a valuable resource.

As Tadweer becomes the sustainable waste champions of the #UAE, achieving our goal of diverting 80% of waste from landfill by 2028, we will continue to convene partners at COP28 and beyond. This will showcase how we are converting challenges, such as the 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions derived from waste, into opportunities.

I hope to see you there.

The Circular Economy: Shaping Sustainable Futures in the UAE, will take place on Monday 4th December, from 12:45-1:25pm at the UAE Pavilion, Blue Zone.
